Google Workspace Updates for Educators
Google releases frequent updates to tools like Docs, Classroom, Drive, Meet, and Gmail. To make these changes easier to follow, this page highlights recent updates that are most useful in K–12 classrooms and school workflows.
This list is curated by educators, for educators — focusing on practical changes that impact teaching, learning, and daily school work. Below you’ll find highlights from the past month, along with links to Google’s official update pages if you’d like to explore everything that’s new.
How do those updates actually work in a classroom?
What have you tried and verified, and what do you want to know more about?
Check out what Idaho educators are learning about the latest Google Workspace updates.
It has been a busy week for the "Big G." As we discuss AI in our classrooms, Google is busy embedding it further into our daily tools. Here are the updates you need to know about:
Finding that one specific email from a parent just got easier. You can now ask natural language questions in the Gmail search bar (e.g., "What did the PTA say about the silent auction date?") and Gemini will provide a summarized answer at the top of your results, pulling from multiple threads.
Google Vids continues to evolve for educators. You can now use Nano Banana 2 (the latest image model) to upload a school logo and create custom-branded AI avatars. This is a game-changer for creating consistent, professional-looking "How-To" videos for your staff or students without ever having to step in front of a camera.
If you’ve created custom Gems (specialized AI personalities), you can now integrate them directly into your Workspace Studio flows. Imagine an "IEP-Checker Gem" that you can trigger to scan a document for specific compliance language automatically.
Google has postponed the deletion of "orphaned" secondary calendars until October 5, 2026, for Workspace accounts. However, for those of you with personal Google accounts, the lifecycle change still hits April 27, 2026. Make sure you've transferred ownership of any important shared calendars!
Gemini tools within Google Classroom are now available in all Classroom-supported languages. This is a massive win for our ENL (English New Learner) teachers and students, allowing for AI-assisted brainstorming and feedback in a student’s native tongue.
Google is constantly working behind the scenes to enhance and refine the tools you use every day. Here's a quick digest of ongoing improvements and reminders that matter to Idaho educators:

1) Google Classroom: Built-in Video Creation & Feedback Tools
Teachers can now create or attach short instructional videos directly inside Classroom (including screen + camera recording).
Why it matters:
• Easier to give personalized video feedback
• Quick reteach or clarification videos without third-party tools
• Great for flipped or blended classrooms
This reduces the need for external screen recorders and keeps everything in one place.
2) Improved PDF Access and Annotation in Classroom
PDF handling in Classroom continues to improve — smoother access, better commenting, and easier grading workflows.
Why it matters:
• More efficient grading of worksheets/packets
• Better markup tools for feedback
• Cleaner workflow when students submit PDFs
For teachers who rely on digital paper workflows, this is a big usability win.
3) Enhanced Feedback Tools in Google Classroom (Rolling Out)
Expanded feedback options are being introduced to make commenting clearer and more streamlined.
Why it matters:
• Faster grading
• More consistent comment banks
• Better student clarity on revisions
If you use rubrics or frequent comments, this is worth watching.
4) Continued Gemini + Workspace Integration Improvements
Google continues embedding Gemini across Docs, Slides, and Gmail with refinements to suggestions and drafting support.
Why it matters:
• Faster lesson draft creation
• Slide outline generation
• Email summarizing for overloaded inboxes
Not a flashy single feature — but steady improvements that are becoming more practical in daily workflow.
